Update on Incentive and Challenge Grants and Initiatives Being Discussed by Staff to the Emerging Worker Sub-Committee of the State Workforce Investment Board

2001 Regional Conferences to Connect Education, Careers and the Workplace:The New York State Education Department's Office of Workforce Preparation and Continuing Education (OWPCE) is sponsoring a third-year series of seven one-day professional development regional conferences. They are designed to help educators with implementation of: the new Regents Policy for Career and Technical Education, the Learning Standards for Career Development and Occupational Studies, and workforce development initiatives such as support for emerging workers and one-stop delivery systems funded under WIA Title I.

Two in-depth workshops tailored for WIA Title I staff, youth council members, members of local workforce investment boards: The NYS Department of Labor, the NYS Education Department, and the NYS Office of Children and Family Services are co-sponsoring two workshops for youth council members, local workforce investment boards, and Workforce Investment staff. Except for Rochester, they will be held from 11:15 to 12:10, and 1:30-2:25 at each of the regional forums.

  1. State Directions and Initiatives to Support Emerging Workers: Opportunities to discuss strengths, challenges, and promising program practices for emerging workers, including development of comprehensive year-round programs, update on financial and technical assistance support, input into program initiatives being discussed by the Emerging Worker Sub-Committee of the State Workforce Investment Board for the next two years, how to disseminate successful practices, possible initiatives to support and expand business involvement, funds to support comprehensive youth programs.

  2. Connecting Education and Youth Development with WIA Title I Youth Programs: Staff will provide an overview of education and youth development initiatives that can support WIA Title I programs for emerging workers and discuss specific strategies for connecting with education and youth development programs in your region.
